Take a Colorful Trip with Me!!

Okay, it’s autumn, and just beyond my writing window…gold, yellow, lavender, and so many shades of green. Because color is often how we make decisions. His brown eyes; that green front door; my big red car will definitely stand out in California’s mass of traffic.

Autumn is my favorite season, because of color…bright green lawns against the falling yellow leaves. Nature offering a gift in this part of the world, before nature takes a nap.

BUT THEN ANOTHER QUESTION. WHAT IS COLORFUL IN YOUR LIFE? LOOK AROUND! RIGHT NOW, COLOR IS EVERYWHERE!!

We flew to Boston, took a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, amazed by the ocean, the sky reflecting deep blue waves.

On another day, we drove to see The Gay Head Lighthouse, which was the first lighthouse built on Martha’s Vineyard and one of the first in the U.S. to receive a Fresnel lens in 1856. But to protect the land and environment where the lighthouse stood, a committee worked in conjunction with the town of Aquinnah and Martha’s Vineyard to raise approximately $3.5 million to relocate the lighthouse about 129 feet (39 m) from its former location. This was done to preserve this amazing structure and the land surrounding it.

During our walking tour of Oak Bluffs, which is where our ferry docked, we love to shop at THE BLACK DOG, then wander the streets where in 1835, the local Methodists began holding camp meetings on a half-acre they purchased from Oak Bluffs for their organization. Outdoor worship meetings were held in a large open air building which is still there today, surrounded by charming homes painted in greens, pinks and violets, and all reflecting the same gingerbread architectural style. The homes became necessary when the visiting families extended their time on the island, needing a substantial dwelling instead of a canvas tent. The construction of these cottages began around 1864.

The most charming and inviting part of being on Martha’s Vineyard is simply imaging what it would be like to live there. So many lovely homes, big and small, with sandy yards presenting masses of blue and purple hydrangeas. My daughter Carrie and her husband Ben were married on the island…the background of their ceremony a tributary of the ocean with waving trees and blue skies. This is the spirit of Martha’s Vineyard that invites famous authors, writers, photographers, artists and ex-presidents with its charm and vibrant scenery.

But each of us, wherever we live, can love and appreciate the gifts of nature…especially when autumn is literally throwing color everywhere. So I’ll close with a photo of my golden tree. Happy Autumn! Enjoy, for it you live where I live, winter is coming.
