Because it’s August, and the garden is in full bloom, all the various cultivars having reached their desired height, most of them flowering, but have not yet gone to seed. And yes, they are beautiful, and they know it, this being the time when most plants let their egos take over. Why? Because it’s August!
So…you really must walk through your garden early in morning, or in the evening as the sun is fading. You know, those amazing times, when you feel cool breezes touching your skin and maybe the birds are singing, your flowers welcoming movements of their delicate velvet petals while preforming their wispy leaf dances.
It’s also the time to be out of your house, again, listening. Because your flowers, your cultivars are speaking…though in my garden and maybe in yours, they are often complaining…because now it is August. Flowers always complain in August…
It’s weedy over here, you need to free up my feet.
Look, I know you love me, because you are always bragging about your HYDRANGIAS…as if all of us were the kings, queens of this garden. So treat us that way…there’s a weed leaning into me. You know the one: tall green with those spikes reaching into me. And it’s not a TICKLE, damn it, but a JAB. SO FREE ME FROM THIS MONSTER!
Wow, it was very quiet, so I just heard this particular rosebush. She IS definitely a bit of a complainer, and I will release her from that WEED. But a word to the wise, gardeners and non-gardeners:
Roses are always very fussy, and they will jab at you with their thorns whenever they feel like it. Which is not very polite, but you know how it is…the thorn thing being their protection…which rather contradicts that so many of their relatives are grown to symbolize LOVE. The rose with the engagement ring. The roses at the wedding, the graduation, the birthdays…even at funerals. ROSES think they are SO SPECIAL…jabbing you with their thorns while you try to arrange them in a vase. Maybe over time, that is why they have those thorns and are often hard to care for and arrange in a vase. DON’T TOUCH ME, I’M SO SPECIAL.
Even so, a garden isn’t a true garden unless you have at least one of these fussbudgets to brag about. So check out my roses in the far corner…aren’t they amazing?
And if you have a particular cultivar that you love, one that pleases you and doesn’t have a huge ego…

This is a beautiful time of year to be outdoors in nature in a garden to enjoy sights, sounds and smells. It didn’t take much for me to imagine peacefully walking through your beautiful garden. I enjoyed the walk.
Ah Pat, you are the best. THANKS. And I did mean what I wrote…the garden is also a struggle, so many weeds, the apple tree overflowing and you know who clean up the apples, a certain person who has the male family trait…afraid of bees.
I love stepping onto my back deck every summer morning and surveying my yard. What a pleasure this time of year is, even though it gets very hot. Every season has so much to offer and as the years go by, we appreciate it more. Your garden sounds awesome and love how you appreciate it.
Thanks, Laurie, BUT IT DOES REQUIRE SOME WORK. Have a great week, Beth
Those roses truly are amazing.
If you are liking that they TALK TO ME!! Yes, they are. Thanks for reading, Beth
